Scout has just come through the doggie and the smell is undeniable. He has been sprayed by a skunk! What to do? Dogs will often get sprayed in the face. So first check their nose, eyes, and mouth.  If your dog’s eyes red or watering rinse them with cold water or an eyewash solution. Human-grade is fine. Now, what to do about the horrendous smell? There are a few different safe ways. Depending on how bad your dog was sprayed most of these methods may have to be repeated.
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, BAKING SODA, AND DISH SOAP. Mix together one quart of three percent hydrogen peroxide, a quarter cup baking soda and one teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap. Wear rubber gloves and wash your dog immediately after they have been sprayed. Put the mixture all over the dogs avoiding their eyes. Leave on for 20 minutes. Then follow up by shampooing with their dog’s regular shampoo and rinse very well. You may have to repeat this two or three times.

TOMATO JUICE- lather your dog in his regular shampoo, dry him off and then cover him in tomato juice, saturating the coat completely and letting it soak for 10 to 20 minutes before rinsing and washing again with your dog’s shampoo. You may have to repeat these steps several times and, if your dog is white, they may temporarily turn orange after the procedure.

SKUNK SPECIFIC SHAMPOO, SPRAY, OR SOAKER-
Look for a product that has been specifically formulated to get rid of skunk odor. You can usually find these at pet supply stores or veterinarians offices. Please be sure to read the instructions on the packaging and always avoid your dog’s eyes.

HOW TO AVOID FUTURE SKUNK ENCOUNTERS-
Skunks are nocturnal creatures. They come out after dusk.  Skunks do not like lit up yards so consider putting a light in your backyard. A few solar lights would great! If you cannot do that make sure that you accompany your dog outside in the evening to keep him out of trouble. Keep trash can lids on so skunks aren’t lured by tonight’s dinner. Also, avoid giving your dog food or treats outside. If you do these things you should be able to avoid another sneak attack from Mr. Skunk.
